Higher education in the State of Sergipe was started in 1920, has operated in 1950 with the creation of Schools of Economics and Chemistry, Faculty of Law and Catholic University of Philosophy in 1951. In 1954 it created the School of Social Work and in 1961 the Faculty of Medical Sciences. With this number of schools could request the creation of a University of Sergipe. By Law 1194 July 11, 1963, the State Government of Sergipe, authorizing the transfer of Educational Establishments in the State for the Federal University of Sergipe, in either organization by the Federal Government. Four years later, was introduced to the Federal University of Pernambuco, on 28 February 1967, by Decree-Law 269 and installed on May 15, 1968, with the incorporation of 06 Schools or Colleges that served 10 courses administered by 05 colleges and 05 institutes. Due to the Brazilian university reform were established 04 Academic Centers that coordinate currently 26 departments and 103 courses. Student body increased from 638 in the year of its creation, to 10,375 to date.
The Academic and Administrative Units of the UFS work, for the most part, in University City "Prof.. José Aloisio de Campos." This forms part of University City: The Rectory, the City Campus, the Sports Industry, the Academic Centers (CCBS, CCET, CCSA, and CECH), Main Library - BICEN the University Restaurant - Resun, the Center for Data Processing -- CPD, the Central Archives, the Center Board and Audiovisual - CEAV, and the College Application - CODAP. Work outside the University Campus: The Campus Health, Campus Advanced Crasto, Rural Campus, the Campus Advanced Xingó, the Center for Culture and Art - CULTART Museum of Man and Sergipe.
