University of PaduaThe University of Padua traces its origins back to 1222 when a group of law students migrated spontaneously from Bologna to Padua, forming a free association organised into nationes according to their geographic origins. The motto "Universa Universis Patavina Libertas" - 'complete liberty for all at the University of Padua' - underlines the total freedom of thought that the university has always granted its teachers and its students. This same freedom of thought attracted famous scientists to Padua: in the field of medicine, Gian Battista Da Monte and William Harvey, in the field of astronomy, Copernicus and Galileo Galilei, who worked in Padua from 1592 to 1610. The University of Padua has also welcomed the first woman in the world to obtain a degree, Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia, who studied and graduated here in 1678.

The institution consists of 13 faculties that offer 103 first cycle degree courses, 82 second cycle degree courses, 71 Short specialization degree courses, 66 specialization schools (mostly medical ones) and a school of excellence (Scuola Galileiana di Studi Superiori). Moreover the research departments host over 76 different doctoral programmes, which are grouped in 34 doctoral schools and 4 doctorate courses.

It is one of the most important higher education institution in Italy with more than sixty thousand students (40000 at bachelor level, 20000 at master level and 1500 at doctoral level), 230 post-doc researchers, 2300 members of the teaching staff and 2300 members of the administrative staff.
The University of Padua is member of the following mobility programmes/networks: Lifelong Learning Programme, Erasmus Mundus, Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window, Coimbra Group, T.I.M.E.- Top Industrial Managers for Europe; and has signed several international bilateral agreements with European and non-European universities.
